Who writes it
Lens Rulebook is written and maintained by Daniel C. Swenson, a licensed Minnesota attorney and data nerd who builds sites that make public information usable, as a hobby. It is an educational publication in the self-help tradition: it explains two federal regulations in plain English, cites its sources, and gives readers tools to use themselves. It is not a law firm acting for you, and nothing here is legal or medical advice about your situation. Reading this site does not create an attorney-client relationship.
Why it exists
The Eyeglass Rule and the Contact Lens Rule exist because the person who measures your eyes also, usually, sells the thing the measurement unlocks, and Congress and the FTC decided that conflict should not trap you. The rules work, but only for people who know them, and the industry has decades of practice at quietly not mentioning them. This site exists to even that up: the rule text, the citations, and the exact words to use.
How it makes money, stated plainly
One way: some retailer links on the buying-guide pages may be referral links that pay this site a small commission. A referral fee never changes the price you pay, no retailer pays to appear here or to rank or to be described a certain way, and the descriptions do not change when a link becomes a referral link. Everything informational is free: the rules, the scripts, and every citation.
